Full Description
<1> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-CE9A87 (Digital Archive). SCH5212.
Half of a hand-formed curler, made of an off white, very slightly creamy buff, fabric, with fine white gritty inclusions, probably from a local fireclay type deposit. The thicker end is slightly uneven, varying from 18.4 to 19.2mm in diameter, but with quite a smooth, slightly domed end. The sides are rather rougher in surface finish with some wipe marks. On the body are some clear scrape marks, as if a tool has been used to smooth/pull down the clay. This has left a slight gloss in places, but it appears to be smoothing rather than burnishing. The handmade form and coarse fabric suggests a late 17th century to early 18th century date (c1660-1730) and a local manufacture. Length: 30.6mm; diameter of domed end 18.4mm - 19.2mm; diameter at broken end: 11.4mm; weight: 8.4g.
