Monument record 11477/1 - Site of the showground of the 1893 Royal Agricultural Show, Hoole

The Royal Agricultural Shows held in Hoole in 1893 from June 17th to 23rd. The show ground covered 100 acres of land. There was a full length grandstand, with covered stands and platforms for 4000 persons and a Royal Box. All the buildings, end to end, were six miles long. Nine separate buildings provided refreshments, with two large dining rooms and a large Royal Pavilion of three rooms.

Cheshire HER site recording form completed by the Hoole History and Heritage society for the site of the showground of the Royal Agricultural Show held in Hoole between 17-23rd June 1893. Records the location and extent of the showground A plan of the showgound from 1893 survives and this has been overlain on modern maps to show the extent of the showground on what was at the time, open farmland owned by Hoole House estate. Surviving evidence of the infrastructure created for the show which included gateway to a former footbridge from Chester railstation, drains and pathways in the allotments that date from 1892 and the possible brick footings of the Royal Pavilion. Also lists finds from the allotments and a garden in Hoole lane of late 19th century date.
