Full Description

A cast copper alloy sword or dagger pommel of medieval date. The object is a wheel pommel from a sword or dagger, of the same form of Ward Perkins 1940, Type VIII sword pommel (see 3). The object is circular in plan and sub-octagonal in cross-section, created by the chamfered edges typical of the type. A rectangular perforation runs through the length of the object which is larger at the blade end and narrows towards the butt. The perforation at the butt end of the pommel is damaged on each side. One side has a small crack where the damage occurs while the other side has a large split running from the corner of the perforation diagonally down to one side of the pommel. The large split is 35mm in length. The split becomes a shallow crack running upwards and undulating back towards the perforation. The perforation measures 10mm in length and is 15mm in width (including the damage). The larger complete perforation at the blade end of the pommel measures 18mm in length and 9.5mm in width. The object has a smooth light brown patina with patches of light green corrosion where the patina has broken away on each face. Similar examples which can be found on the database are LANCUM-C5B237 and NMS-42BF17.Dimensions: 38mm in length, 44mm in width, 25mm thick, 66.90g
