Full Description

A copper alloy crotal bell dating of post-medieval date (1500-1700). The object is spherical and consists of two halves joined by a raised median band. The upper half has two perforated circular holes on each half on the object. Between each perforation is an integral rectangular attachment loop. On the lower half two sound holes which are joined by a rectangular slot. The lower sphere is inscribed with the initials SC above which (on the far side of the slot) are three inscribed wedges. These are surrounded by a double incised oval border beyond which are radiating incised grooves. The pea is intact and mobile. The object is in good condition and is decorated by curving grooved decoration forming a series of loops. It has a mid-grey patina with a white metal coating, possibly tin. Dimensions: 40mm in length, 34mm in width, 32.35g.
