<2> Gifford and Partners, 1993, Final Report on Building Recording Work at No. 14 Bewsey Street, Warrington, R3365 (Client Report). SCH6891.
No.14 Bewsey Street was surveyed in 1993 prior to its proposed demolition as part of the Warrington Southern Expressway. The survey involved detailed recording of all external and internal features with the use of tape, Electronic Distance Measuring equipment and photographs.
No.14 Bewsey Street was a detached Georgian townhouse probably built in 1768 and is a Grade II Listed Building. The central 3-storey wing with full height canted bay windows to front and rear was originally flanked by two-storey recessed wings with hipped rooves. The house was shown in this form on a map of 1772 in a semi-rural setting fronting onto Bewsey Street to the north and with a large ornamental garden to the south (rear) of the building.
A number of subsequent additions and alteraltions to the the building changed its appearance and obscured elements of its original form. Most significant of these was a single-storey 5-sided bay to the rear added between 1772 and 1851 and a 2-storeyed build housing the main entrance fronting the east wing built between 1826 to 1851. An adjoining house, No.12 Bewsey Street, a similar Georgian property was demolished circa 1965.
<3> Gifford and Partners, 1996, Report on the Dismantling of Number 14 Bewsey Street, Warrington, R2151 (Client Report). SCH4061.
A building survey was undertaken in 1995 of No.14 Bewsey Street to record the controlled dismantling of the building in advance of the construction of the Warrington Southern Expressway. A Public Inquiry granted permission to dismantle the building on condition future reconstruction would be possible. A brief inspection of the building was undertaken prior to the commencement of dismantling in order to record its condition. All features of archaeological interest were recorded during dismantling, including numerous blocked doorways and windows, providing detailed information for the reconstruction of the original building design. The resulting report includes and assessment of the Georgian construction techniques used in the building together with a comprehensive account of the its structure. It also includes detailed drawings of the building to enable it to be accurately reconstructed.
The survey revealed that the original structure consisted of a central three storey block with contemporary east and west wings, two storeys high. Secondary additions included a single storey five-sided bay to the rear and extensions to the east and west wings.
