A row of cottages on Dickens Lane east of Waterloo Road was built to house colliery workers; these were constructed as back-to-backs, but only one pair remains so (253, 255 Dickens Lane), the others all having been converted since Second World War. These are visible on the 1849 estate map and were built in the early 19th century by the Vernon Estate to house colliers.
