Summary

A ditch and other deposits containing roman pottery of late 1st/2nd century date were excavated in 2001 on the former Deva Garage site, 27 Grosvenor Park Road. The ditch was interpreted as the rear boundary of a Roman tenement, fronting onto the Roman road running beneath the line of Foregate Street, within the civilian settlement associated with the legionary fortress. Other deposits containing pottery of the same date have been interpreted as potential cultivation soils situated towards the back of the tenement. To the north of the ditch a fairly large pit was located during an earlier watching brief also in 2001, this contained pottery suggestive of an early 2nd century date. The pit had been capped with a thick deposit of sterile clay, possibly suggesting continued use of the plot after this time. Residual pottery recovered from the site would support the notion that some level of occupation continued on site during the later 2nd and 3rd centuries. No evidence for structures was identified.
