Full Description
<1> National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, 1995, An Archaeological Assessment for a Proposed Sand and Gravel Quarry at Adlington Estate, Adlington, Cheshire. (Client Report). SCH4127.
A potential sub-rectangular enclosure showing as a cropmark was observed on air photographs as part of an archaeological desk-based assessment undertaken in 1995 in advance of a proposed sand and gravel quarry in the Adlington Estate, Adlington. Only three sides (east, west and south) of the enclosure are visible measuring 43m by 38m. It is suggested that this could represent a small settlement enclosure of Iron Age/Roman date. Its location on a flattish area within a predominantly westward-facing slope overlooking the stream is well-suited for this purpose.
