Burland Hall was formerly the seat of a collateral line of the Griffins of Barterton. Burland Hall was transferred, by marriage to an heiress of the Allens family, to William Hewitt of Chester sometimes around the middle of the seventeenth century. It was subsequently transferred, again my marriage, to the Holfords of Davenham. In 1788 it was sold to the Tollemaches.

Labelled Burland Hall. The farmhouse and L shaped farm building are depicted. The Farmhouse has a narrow range connected to its western side at an oblique angle. The yard to the north contains a hand pump.
<6> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ6053, 1910 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.
A narrow building with attached pens has been constructed to the east of the farmhouse. Possibly pigsties.
<7> Chester Courant, 1878-1990, The Cheshire Sheaf, Vol.18 (1921) p.106-8, 109-11 [4476}, [4479] & [4483] (Newspaper-Magazine). SCH3105.
Burland Hall appears to be an eighteenth century brick farm house, but closer inspection shows that it embodies an older timber framed building which has been recased and altered. The two rear outer gables still possess portions of the original timber work, which can be seen on the exterior of the eastern gable and on the interior of the western one. On the western side is a large chimney stack built of old narrow bricks. The front of the house is of a larger and later style of brick, one of which has had ID or TD and the date 1746 scratched into it prior to firing. The author suggests that this is the date for the complete rebuilding of the front of the house. The farm buildings to the rear have similar bricks bearing the initials RD and RB and the date 1816. The house lay within a moat (filled in at a cost of 84s), which was still extant in the nineteenth century and the present house was erected around 1600. The house contains a stained glass window which seems to be made from parts recovered from other windows.
