Summary

Cheaveley is first mentioned in 958. In Domesday it had land for 5 ploughs, with 3 villagers & 1 smallholder with 2 ploughs. It was among the estates of the secular canons of St Werburgh. It was confirmed to the Benedictine monks of St Werburgh in 1093. Suggested as the site of a deserted medieval village, but no evidence for such a theory. No field evidence around Cheaveleyhall Farm. A marked platform at SJ 41956165 represents an earlier range of farm buildings. Traces of earthworks at SJ 42076180 were too mutilated to be intelligible.
