Monument record 7640 - Roman Villa at Tilston

"Many believe that the rectangular cropmarks shown on the aerial photograph of May 1985 (see 2), following the drought year, are in fact the outline of a Roman villa in a large field behind Tilston Church."

A dense complex of straight linear soil marks are visible in a large field c.250m to the east-north-east of the church.

Some of the soil marks are consistent with the locations of field boundaries depicted on historic maps. Some are consistent with the fragmentary remains of ridge and furrow earthworks visible on later aerial images (see 4). Others are consistent with patterns of field drainage and agricultural practice. Unfortunately, after a more detailed assessment of the available sources, there is no evidence to support the villa hypothesis.
