Full Description

<1> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

The earliest mapped depiction of the farm. It is labelled Snape. The label Snape Farms corresponds with Snape Bank Farm.

<2> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Vol.III, p.76 (Book). SCH3228.

The earliest documentary reference to 'le Snape' dates from AD 1433. It is uncertain if this and later references directly relates to the farm.

<3> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 421/2 1846 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

Snape Farm is clearly depicted and labelled on the tithe map for Weston Township. The map depicts a number of small fields or paddocks and three buildings adjacent to the road. The accompanying award records it as being in the ownership of Sir John Delves Broughton and occupied by William Edwards.

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7451, 1876 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

It is clear from this map that the more southerly building is the farmhouse. The L shaped and larger of the northerly buildings is a barn or shippon. The small plots appear to include orchards.

<5> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7451, 1899 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

A new farmhouse has been constructed to the west of L shaped range of farm buildings. Possible pig sties have been built in-between and a further building has been built to the south. The former farmhouse has been demolished.

<6> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7451, 1909 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

The L shaped range of farm buildings have been extended to form a U shaped range. To the south, an open sided barn has been constructed adjacent to the road.
