Please read our .

Summary

A map dating from 1831 shows a lane, called Piper's Lane, running from Welltank Farm to the Holmes Chapel Road via Fields Farm. The name possibly derives from Latin word pipere, some feature of the road, i.e. dusty, or the surname Piper. A number of adjacent fields also include Piper in their name and local folklore suggests that this name derives from the burial of Scottish soldiers here during the Civil War.
