Full Description

<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 278/2 1838 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The tithe map shows two possible lime kilns adjacent to the lane and two further circular features and a T shaped building c.300m to the south east. The accompanying award makes no reference to a limeworks.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depicts two kilns adjacent to the lane. It suggests that the kilns are built into the slope and serviced on the lower side by one of the many tracks depicted in the woodland. This track is a spur from a track which leads to Limekiln Farm. A rectangular building is depicted to their south east. A shaft seems to be located at either end of the building. Two further shafts and an 'old kiln' are depicted in the vicinity of these features. The complex is labelled 'Lime Works Disused'.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

The building is no longer depicted, but the associated shafts are labelled as 'Old Air Shafts'. The kilns are labelled as 'Old Kilns'.

<4> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards, R 13/11/2014 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Whether this is a seperate limeworks or forms part of the adjacent Astbury Limeworks (CHER 2946/1/0) is uncertain. It is possible that the building depicted on (1) and flanked by the two shafts, is an engine house.

<5> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

this map depicts a building at this location which is labelled Lime Works.
