The memorial was commissioned by the Civil Parish of Appleton and unveiled on the 12th November 1921 in a ceremony led by Lt Col Charles Lyon of Appleton Park, whose son is one of those commemorated. The Hon Canon C F Cross, Rural Dean, conducted the dedication ceremony. It was designed by local architect Captain Frederick Jardine Barnish. The memorial commemorates the men connected to the village who were lost in the First and Second World Wars. Built of sandstone, it is an octagonal column on a square base and plinth, capped by a capital in the form of a dragon. A niche contains a statue of St George (carbon fibre replacement for the original bronze). All are intricately carved and decorated. The octagonal base contains the names, in gold lettering, of those lost in the First World War. An additional inscription contains the names of those lost in the Second World War.
