<2> Royal Archaeological Institute, 1845-Present, Archaeological Journal, Vol.43 p.283 (Journal/Periodical). SCH338.
At Vicar's Cross, two or three miles from Chester on the Roman road to Northwich, a small circular plate of lead has been found during the year, bearing upon it the numerals VIII. It is an inch and seven-eighths in diameter, half an-inch in thickness, and weighs half a pound. It appears to have been used for some game, and strongly resembles similar objects in pottery found at Colchester. It is now in the Chester Museum.
<3> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ 46 NW 59 (Index). SCH2487.
The location and the date of the find could not be ascertained during field investigation. The Grosvenor Museum confirmed that the weight is still in their possession, but have no records of its acquisition. [Davies D.A. 12/09/1959].
<4> Chester Archaeological Society, Journal of the Chester Archaeological Society, Vol.9 p.130 (Journal/Periodical). SCH1595.
The lighter weight marked VIII, weighing 3240 grains, found at Vicar’s Cross in 1885, corresponds to the bes (2/3 llibra) or eight unciae of the later Latin standard, and approximates
closely to the uncia (3240/8=) 405 grains of the Melandra set.
<5> Cambrian Archaeological Association, 1846–present, Archaeologia Cambrensis, Vol.15 p.423-4 (Journal/Periodical). SCH305.
