Monument record 7535 - Fish Pond at Ashfields

Please read our .

Summary

A group of adjacent fields recorded on the tithe apportionment which all have 'fish pool' in the plot name. This area is level and bounded by the 65m contour. The latter turns 90 degrees to follow the surviving north-western field boundary of the field named Fish Pool Dam (a trackway also follows this boundary). This contour is at ninety degrees to the flow of the artificial channel draining the brook at this point. This is the possible site of a medieval fishpond.

Full Description

<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 1919/2 c.1844 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

A group of adjacent fields recorded on the tithe apportionment which all have 'fish pool' in the plot name (plot 401 Fish Pool Dam, plot 442 Fish Pool Piece, plot 443 Fish Pool Piece, plot 444 Fish Pool Piece, plot 480 Fish Pool Hill, plot 481 Fish Pool Piece and plot 482 Fish Pool Piece).

<2> Ordnance Survey, Various, Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 (Maps and Plans). SCH7262.

The area in the which the majority of these fields is located is level and bounded by the 65m contour. The latter turns 90 degrees to follow the surviving north-western field boundary of the field named Fish Pool Dam (a trackway also follows this boundary). This contour is at ninety degrees to the flow of the artificial channel draining the brook at this point.

<3> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R 29/07/2014 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Possible site of a medieval fishpond, however I suspect this may have been a modified natural waterbody or wetland.

<4> Huntings Surveys Ltd, 1971-1973, 1971-1973 County Survey (Aerial Photograph). SCH4881.

When viewed stereoscopically the majority of these fields lie within a natural basin. The majority of the ridge along the north-western boundary is natural, but where drain connects with the natural watercourse there is a narrow valley across which is a linear earthwork on which the trackway runs. This may be the dam referenced in the field name.
