Find Spot record 15337 - Find from Land West of Little Boar's Wood

A cast copper-alloy clapper bell of late Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. It is complete with the exception of the iron clapper that is mostly missing due to old breaks. The bell has an everted rim which is decorated with a circumferential groove. At the top it has rounded shoulders and a flattened upper surface with a prominent circumferential ridge around its edge below which is another circumfrential decorative groove. Extending from the centre of the upper surface is an integrally cast suspension loop that is flat, rectangular in form with a central circular perforation. A circumfrential groove surrounds the base of the suspension loop. The top of the loop is damaged at one edge. The object has a mid-green patina and is corroded and pitted.

A similar, smaller bell is noted from London from contexts that date to the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries AD (see 2).
