Full Description
<1> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-611DDD (Digital Archive). SCH5212.
A large cast lead alloy weight dating from the Roman to the Post-Medieval period, (43-1700). The object is circular in plan. The upper face is stamped with the numeral I. On the upper face of the object is a slight raised rim which has been flattened inwards. The lower surface is worn but undecorated. The object has a mid-white patina and weighs 425.6g.
Lead weights are common throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (see 2) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that these weights are significantly later in date (17th to 18th Centuries AD). For other examples recorded on the PAS, see (3).
