Full Description

<1> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-4BA147 (Digital Archive). SCH5212.

A cast copper alloy buckle probably dating to the Roman period, (AD43-410). The object buckle frame is 'kidney-bean' shaped with a rounded projection in the centre of the buckle. Below this is a rectangular strap bar measuring 29mm in width. The object has a rounded projecting tip decorating the outer frame. It is D-shaped in cross-section. The object has a dark brown patina and is in fair condition. The buckle appears to be a Roman military type.

<2> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-24D871 (Digital Archive). SCH5212.

A cast copper alloy headstud brooch dating to the Roman period. The head is comprised of short rectangular wings from the centre of which the bow projects and tapers downwards towards the foot. Each wing is decorated with a vertical ridge. The bow tapers in width towards the foot which projects forwards and is rounded. A raised stud decorates the bow at the base of the head and measures 5.82mm in diameter. The stud is worn and is in-filled with red enamel. The bow is decorated with a central panel of rectangular cells which alternate between those in-filled with red enamel and another colour which is worn, possibly green. The foot is defined with a collar and deep horizontal groove.

The brooch is a hinged example. The axis bar is mounted in a tube fitted behind curved wings. At the rear of the object the pin is missing and the long catchplate is incomplete. The object has a dark green patina and is corroded and worn. The brooch can be classified as Worrell Group 2, (Worrell, PAS training handout). It can be dated from AD 75 - 200.

<3> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-251505 (Digital Archive). SCH5212.

A cast copper alloy Polden Hill brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD75-175. The wings are semi-cylindrical and terminate with a break. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is decorated with two vertical ridges running parallel with each other, which terminate opposite the start of the catchplate, creating a rectangular pannel. The bow is sub-oval in section, and gradually tapers to break which occurred in antiquity and is corroded. Only a small fragment of the upper catchplate remains. The object has a dark brown patina which is chipped off in places revealing a light green corroded surface.

The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (see 4) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120.
