A Heinkel He111s bomber of the Luftwaffe's 6/KG55 shot down during a raid on Birkenhead docks on the 12th March 1941. The aircraft was shot down by a Hurricane of the RAF's 96 Squadron killing two crew. The remaining three crew bailed out, parachuted to safety and were subsequently apprehended by the home guard. The now abandoned bomber which was losing altitude collided with a barrage balloon cable located at McKechnie Brothers Ltd on Ditton Road and crashed in fields adjacent to the ICI recreation ground. The wreckage was initially left insitu to allow a detailed examination, but was eventually cleared away within two weeks.
In October 2008 the Lancashire Investigation Team undertook a detailed investigation to pinpoint and record the location of the crash site. The site was positively located, but only a few fragments from the aircraft were recovered.
