Full Description

A medieval finger-ring, iconographic in type, with a rectangular bezel engraved with an image of St Christopher supporting the Christ Child on his shoulder. St Christopher carries a staff in his right hand and clutches his cloak around his body with his left. He gazes up at Christ, who raises his right hand in blessing. St Christopher, the patron Saint of travellers, was invoked against sudden death. The shoulders of the ring taper into a slim band and are engraved with flowers. The flowers on the right side retain a portion of white enamel. The finger-ring is gold, and dates from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. This ring is possibly part of the hoard discovered to the south east (see CHER 2563).

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Notes:

Found with a coin.

Both the ring and the coin would be entirely consistent with these items forming addenda to the 1986 Huntington Treasure Trove. This consisted of 1 gold and 42 silver coins and a silver ring. The coins concluded with Henry VI's Pinecone Mascle issue, from the early 1430s and its seven Calais mint groats of the Annulet issue were the largest single group within them. It would seem probable, therefore, that the 2010 find of a groat and ring were originally part of the dame deposit of material, made in the 1430s.

Subsequent action after recording: Acquired by museum after being declared Treasure
