Full Description

<1> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Various, Portable Antiquities Data Import, LVPL-71C0B7 (Digital Archive). SCH5212.

Cast lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). The object is circular in plan and conical. In the centre of the object is a sub-circular perforation which has been drilled from one side. It has an internal diameter of 8.10mm. The object is undecorated and has a light white patina.

Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1066-1500.

In the centre of the object is a circular perforation which measures 8.71mm in diameter. The upper surface has been damaged in recent times around the perforation, possibly due to the plough. On the rear of the object are worn pellets and linear mouldings. The object has a light white patina.

Cast lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). The object is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. In the centre of the object is a circular perforation which measures 9.12mm in diameter. The upper surface has been damaged in recent times around the perforation, possibly due to the plough. The object is decorated with four sub-rectangular depressions, three of which are perforated irregularly. The object has a light white patina.
