Summary

Carriage drive introduced in the 18th century when Eaton Hall Park was created as a designed landscape. The carriage way was recorded on the mid 19th century Tithe maps and all subsequent historic mapping. It is a private road intended to provide access directly to Eaton Hall. The drive currently comprises a tarmac surface and is 2.5m in width. It is flanked by grass verges within a 12m wide avenue of mature trees.

Carriage drive introduced in the 18th century when Eaton Hall Park was created as a designed landscape. The carriage way was recorded on the mid 19th century Tithe maps and all subsequent historic mapping. It is a private road intended to provide access directly to Eaton Hall.

The drive currently comprises a tarmac surface and is 2.5m in width. It is flanked by grass verges within a 12m wide avenue of mature trees.

Topographic survey of a section of the the drive to the South of the Gateway The section of the drive running south from the gateway is edged with stone kerbs The drive is contained within two parallel drainage ditches where it crosses surrounding fields. A watching brief for a pipeline crossing the carriage drive identified a sandstone foundation layer for the original metalled surface of the drive.
