Monument record 11440 - Boundary ditches at Eaton Hall Park

Please read our .

Summary

A field survey of the area to the east of Eaton Hall carriage drive recorded a number of earthwork features of note including several probable boundary ditches in Eaton Hall Park. Both appear to be former field boundaries that predate the 19th century at least as they are not recorded on historic maps or aerial photographs. The first boundary ditchwas identified to the east of Duke's Drive and appears to predate the present woodland area. It was described as curvilinear in form on a north-north-east to south-south-west alignment. The second boundary ditch was identified a little to the north of the first, also to the east of Duke's Drive. This feature comprises a shallow linear ditch on a north-south alignment.

The first boundary ditch (No 41 in the report) was identified to the east of Duke's Drive and appears to predate the present woodland area. It was described as curvilinear in form on a north-north-east to south-south-west alignment and measures approximately 2m in width and 0.4m depth.

The second boundary ditch (No 42 in the report) was identified a little to the north of the first, also to the east of Duke's Drive. This feature comprises a shallow linear ditch on a north-south alignment and measuring approximately 1.5m in width and 0.3m in depth.

Topographic survey in 2016 identified an area of relict field systems and agricultural cultivation, of which these ditches are identified as relict field boundaries. Site 42 was observed during topsoil stripping of the area but no archaeological remains were found. Site 41 was not impacted on during the topsoil strip
