Seven milestones, which date from the 1780s, which formerly stood along the Chester High Road (a turnpike). In 1896 the old sandstone milestones were replaced them with cast iron mileposts. Seven of the milestones were recovered by the headmaster of Mostyn House School and placed alongside the entrance drive. In 1986 the milestones were moved closer to the school. The seven stones are inscribed as follows:
Chester (?2) miles Little Mollington
Chester (?3) miles Great Mollington
Chester ??
Chester 5 miles
Chester ?? miles Ledsham
Chester ?? miles Puddington
Chester 8 miles Willaston
<2> Various, Written Communication to the HER, Annakin-Smith, A. 10/06/2013. (Written Communication). SCH3756.
The stones were installed along the road from Chester to Neston when the turnpike was opened in the late 1780s. The stones are deteriorating and the lettering is becoming increasingly hard to read. Includes photographs.
