In the late 13th century the south side of Eastgate Street between No 12 and No 24 was occupied by the corn market, its associated shops and malt kilns. Development to the rear of these properties was constrained by the surviving Roman ruins of the fortress baths. By the 17th century the facade of this stretch alone survived, comprising a stone frontage of five arches and a stairs known as the ‘Honey Stairs’. It was largely demolished in the late 19th century.
