A large stone hall was recorded on the north side of Eastgate Street in the 13th century. Believed to have belonged to the Abbot of Chester it was leased to Sir John Orby in the later 13th century. Its exact location is uncertain, however a stone hall mentioned near to St Werburgh’s Lane may be the Abbot’s hall.
