A messuage or hospital called Le Crowe is recorded at the eastern end of Foregate Street near Boughton in the late 16th century. The hospital is believed to have been in the possession of the Fraternity of St Anne. Place name evidence records a lane called St Anne’s Rake (later St Anne’s Street) leading north from Boughton.
