<1> SLR Consulting Ltd, 2013, Tower Wharf, Chester: Archaeological mitigation report Phase 1 Infrastructure Works. Roman roadside occupation to Civil War fortification, R3444 (Client Report). SCH7070.
Archaeological investigations at Tower Wharf in 2007-2008 recorded evidence of a pond or quarry pit in the northwest part of the site. The feature was significantly truncated by modern development, however.
The evidence comprised a rounded cut feature [2059] measuring 12m by 6m and cutting 0.65m deep. A single cut feature [2079] was encountered at the base of the pond that may represent an earlier cut, however there was no dating evidence associated with it.
The fill of the pond feature was cut by a series of later, intercutting pits of a possible mid to late second century date, contemporary with the quarry pits encountered to the south (CHER ).
