<1> SLR Consulting Ltd, 2013, Tower Wharf, Chester: Archaeological mitigation report Phase 1 Infrastructure Works. Roman roadside occupation to Civil War fortification, R3444 (Client Report). SCH7070.
Archaeological investigations at Tower Wharf in 2007-2008 recorded evidence of a rock cut circular shaft to the north of the Roman road containing quantities of high quality Roman pottery and roof tile of a first to second century date.
The evidence comprised a circular feature approximately 1m in diameter that had been significantly truncated by modern development. The feature cut into the natural for a depth of approximately 1.2m below the surface. Quantities of Roman pottery and roof tile were recorded from the fill of the shaft, the quality and types being suggestive of a centrally heated, tiled building in the area.
