Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Tower Wharf in 2007-2008 recorded evidence of a substantial well feature with timber superstructure to the south of the Roman road. Although dating evidence was limited, it appears the well fell out of use in the mid to late second century AD.
The evidence comprised a substantial cut feature [2323] cutting through the natural. The upper section of the feature comprised a squarish area 2.6m x 2.4m with rounded corners. This was excavated to a depth of 1.8m below surface at which point the shaft became square in plan measuring 1.55m x 1.55m. This section then gradually narrowed to 1.12m x 1.12m to the maximum excavated depth of 3m below the surface. In addition, four circular rock cut features 0.35m in diameter were excavated in each corner of the well interpreted as post holes for a timber superstructure.
