Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Tower Wharf in 2007 and 2008 recorded evidence of a series of quarry pits dating to the late first to early second century AD.
<1> SLR Consulting Ltd, 2013, Tower Wharf, Chester: Archaeological mitigation report Phase 1 Infrastructure Works. Roman roadside occupation to Civil War fortification, R3444 (Client Report). SCH7070.
The evidence comprised a series of pits in two areas to either side of the present Wharf View Road. Fourteen cuts were made in Area A north of Wharf View, these pits appeared to be located along a narrow strip to the south of the line of the Roman road (CHER 8629) and comprised a series of cuts and re cuts containing pottery and tile fragments.
A second group of pits were encountered in Area B to the south of Wharf View. These pits contained fewer re-cuts. The distribution of pits here was more widespread and variable in form and may represent a different kind of activity although the pit fills suggest they were broadly contemporary with those from Area A.
