Full Description

Medieval hollow way recorded to the east of the town centre on historic maps from the 18th century onwards. The lane has since been converted to a recreational path although the steep banks associated with the hollow way remain in situ. The northern end of the lane where it meets Mannings Lane was curtailed by the introduction of the railway in the mid 19th century while the southern end has been subsumed in the early 20th century residential development at Moor Park.
It has been suggested that the lane follows the line of an earlier Roman road.

The name first appears on the Tithe award of 1842 as a Newton Hollow and appears to refer to a woodland although it follows the path of an earlier lane

Article discussing the history and survival of Newton Hollows. A short tunnel, under the Fairfield Road bridge was stopped up in the 1980s. Photograph of the bridge in this article. The Hollows is suggested as forming part of the route of the Roman road between Chester and Wilderspool.
