Full Description
Archaeological investigations as part of a major redevelopment of the Hunter Street/Princess Street area identified several phases of medieval and later activity.
A small quantity of clay mould fragments were recovered from deposits dating to the 13th-14th centuries. Although traces of metal were detected on the fragments it was impossible to distinguish the metal type. The shape of the mould as suggested by the fragments recovered is a large circular chape with thick tibbing around the circumference although it was too fragmentary to determine what the mould was used for. It was suggested by the specialist that the mould was used to cast a large vessel such as a mortar.
