Full Description
Evidence of medieval structural activity was recorded during archaeological investigations at St John Street in 2006. The excavations were carried out on the site of the former BT Exchange in an area that had previously been investigated by Newstead producing mixed results of medieval and post medieval activity. A substantial medieval pit or cellar was subsequently sealed in the post medieval period by a susbtantial slab surface over which deposists of a post medieval date were encountered.
Later structural evidence was also encountered in trench 2 consisting of the remains of a sandstone foundation [context 25], a brick structure [context 23] and a cobblestone surface [context 30] sealed by demolition deposits. In addition, a number of other architectural fragments were recovered as unstratified or isolated deposits across the site suggesting the proximity of a high status medieval or early post medieval building.
