Archaeological investigations on the site of the public library on St John Street in 1988/89 encountered evidence of a late Roman collapse layer from the eastern defensive wall.
The evidence comprised a substantial deposit if sandstone debris, facing blocks, ashlar blocks and sandstone rubble from the fill of the ditch and sealed by a layer of puddled clay. Pottery recovered from the collapse layer suggest a late third or early fourth century date for this event. A fragment of altar or tombstone was recovered from the debris layer suggesting that the fortress wall had collapsed as far as the sixth course.
