Summary

Substantial wall of possible Roman date recovered during recent archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2012. The wall was recorded outside of the Fortress defences and may relate to a significant Roman structure in the western canabae.

Recent archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2012 uncovered the remains of a substantial stone wall of possible Roman date.

The wall was encountered approximately 10m from Nicholas Street and comprised at least one course or large sandstone blocks on a north-west to south east alignment to the west of the fortress wall. A number of Roman finds were recovered from the contexts surrounding the wall.
