Recent archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2012 uncovered the remains of a substantial stone wall of possible Roman date.
The wall was encountered approximately 10m from Nicholas Street and comprised at least one course or large sandstone blocks on a north-west to south east alignment to the west of the fortress wall. A number of Roman finds were recovered from the contexts surrounding the wall.
