Full Description
Extensive areas of stone quarrying to the north of Chester City Walls has been recorded since the Roman times at least (CHER 8037) while further evidence of stone quarrying in the post medieval period was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Gorse Stacks (CHER 10945).
Levaux’s map of 1745 recorded a substantial area of stone quarrying between Upper Northgate Street and Windmill Street in an area later covered by 19th century housing (2). The quarry appears to have been infilled in the later 18th century and by Hunter’s map of 1789 it had disappeared entirely. (3)
