Full Description

Later medieval fills that levelled the medieval town ditch identified in Foregate St. during the archaeological monitoring of repairs to the mains sewers. The sewer had partially collapsed about 6m outside of the Eastgate in Foregate St. in 1972, and the following excavation revealed these fills, in addition to part of the medieval curtain wall and part of the north tower of the Eastgate (2). Pottery from inside the wall and from the deposits in the town ditch dated to between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The fills were represented largely by laminated sandy deposits, sloped steeply along what must have been the angle of the former ditch (1, 2, 3).
