Please read our .

Summary

St Olave's Ragged School was first built in 1852 on a site adjacent to St Olave's Church. It survived until 1876 when it was demolished and only the playground is recorded on the Ordnance Survey Town Plans of the 1870s. It was subsequently replaced by the St Michael with St Olave's school in 1879 some distance from the Lower Bridge Street frontage. Ragged Schools were constructed in the early 19th century to accommodate those children who were truly poor and could not afford the minimal charges of the National and British schools prevalent at the time. There were three in Chester; the first were at St Olaves and Boughton in 1852 with a third added on Princess Street in 1868.
