Summary

St John's National School was built on Vicars Lane in 1813 by the grandfather of the first Duke of Westminster although it was largely replaced by a larger school on an adjacent site. It continued to operate until 1964 but has since been converted to office use. British National Schools were set up in the 19th century to provide elementary eduction to poor children following the teachings of the Church of England.
