Full Description
A small-scale excavation by the Grosvenor Museum against the north face of City Wall, 40m west of Northgate, in 1980 investigated the Roman fortress' rampart at this location (1). Dug into the upper deposits at this location was a lime kiln, said to date to the nineteenth century. It was assumed that this kiln was associated with consolidation work which is known to have taken place at that time (3).
