Full Description
Archaeological investigations at George Street School in 2002 identified several features of Roman origin in trench 3, interpreted as a possible structure by the excavator.
The evidence consisted of a shallow north-south aligned gully [context 29] with vertical sides and a flat base with a fill of reddish brown clayey silt mix. The feature measured 0.93m in length and was 0.38m wide with a variable depth from 0.27 to 0.09m. A second feature [context 31] was recorded on an east west alignment. This gully had a U shaped profile and measured 0.48m wide and 0.18m deep. Roman pottery of a 2nd to 3rd century date was recovered from these features.
The evidence from this trench was complicated by a later feature destroying the relationship between them, however, their form was suggestive of beam slots for a timber structure. (1)
