Summary

The town of Saltney, straddling the Welsh-English border, was a modern settlement formed in the late 18th century as a result of renewed industry from the river Dee and later from the railways. Prior to this the area was occupied by the Saltney marshes but the successful canalisation of the river Dee enabled land reclamation in the area. In the mid 19th century, three independent railway companies built lines through Saltney, driving growth in the new settlement.
