Monument record 11195 - Tarvin Union Workhouse, Boughton

The Great Boughton Poor Law Union was established in 1837 following the introduction of the Poor Law Amendment Act in 1834. This established a format of industrial sized workhouses serving a number of parishes.

The Tarvin Union Workhouse, on Heath Lane was subsequently open in 1857 and comprised an E shaped plan with a long front range parallel to the main road with three narrow ranges extending from the rear of the front range forming two yards for males and females. To the rear of the site there was a number of ancillary buildings. (3)

The workhouse was used as en elderly care home in the 1940s-1950s but was subsequently demolished in the latter half of the 20th century and replaced with modern housing.
