Full Description
No 1-19 Queen’s Park Road consists of a parade of 12 shops with flats over each built in 1928-32 by Charles Greenwood, the City Engineer for Chester City Council. Built of red brick the surface was shaped to simulate red sandstone. The upper floors have false timber framing with plaster panels with a grey-green slate roof. Designed in the Late Vernacular Revival style. (1)
The composition comprises a symmetrical range of 4 "stone-brick" cottages facing the Dee across Mill Street, a projecting and jet tied gabled shop and flat on the angle with Handbridge. The cottages form successful end-stops in a low-key 17th century manner to a well-handled composition in a key position adjacent to the Old Dee Bridge. They were listed as an excellent example of inter-war municipal town planning, the shops and cottages replaced older shops and condemned dwellings including court-cottages (1)
The rear garden wall at No 1 Queen's Park Road has been spray painted with 'EWL' marking an 'Emergency Water Line' and dates to World War II. (2)
