Summary

The tithe maps depicts a walled garden to the north of Backford Hall. Within the garden, along the western wall, area a range of buildings which are probably glass houses. Full Description

A trapezoidal enclosure with a range of building on the inside of the western boundary is shown tithe map. The tithe award records this as a walled garden (1).

Elements of the walls have survived, incorporated into the later walled garden (CHER 4549/4/1). In addition, it would appear that coping stones from this structure have been reused in on the walls to the later garden. The buildings within the garden are possibly glasshouses, potting shed etc. (2).

No longer extant on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 25" map (3).

These changes were presumably part of the remodelling of the gardens in 1857 (4).
