Full Description
The old hall (CHER 4549/3/0) is mostly taken down. A part of this site is occupied by a handsome brick mansion, built by the father (John Glegg b.1732 d. 1804,) of the present proprietor. The gardens (CHER 4549/4/0) of the 18th century house were, according to Ormerod, laid out by John Webb in the early 19th century (1).
The Tithe map of 1842 shows the layout of the 18th century house and outbuildings. The accompanying award describes these as "Backford Hall, offices, buildings, yards, gardens and plantations". The hall is aligned northeast to southwest and is L shaped. The wing forming the short side of the L is on the southwestern side adjacent to a the drive. The map also suggests the presence of a porch on the southwestern side and bay windows on the southeastern side. A sizable building lies to the immediate north east of the hall. A long ranges of outbuildings, possibly adjacent to a yard, is located to the immediate north-east of the hall (2).
