Full Description
A series of early post medieval pits were recorded during an archaeological evaluation (in Trench 1) at the corner of The Groves and Souter’s Lane, Chester, in 2007 (1). These pits produced a large assemblage of finds, including pottery and items of fifteenth to sixteenth or seventeenth century date; this rubbish disposal indicated nearby occupation in the period and the presence of relatively large amounts of coal indicate that the area was used for dumping of possible industrial waste. A fragment of a copper alloy smelting crucible was found, and relatively large numbers of cattle horn cores indicate tanning may have been carried out in the vicinity (1).
